Before You Fly: The Pre-Trip Checklist
The trip is won or lost before you board the plane. Here's everything to confirm, prepare and pack — in order.
8 weeks out: the medical plan
- Confirm the hospital match. Send your records, scans and images to the hospital's international department for remote review, and get a written treatment plan and itemized quote. See how to choose a hospital.
- Get the invitation documents. If you need the S2 medical visa, request the hospital invitation letter with your treatment plan and cost estimate. See the S2 visa guide.
- Check your insurance. Confirm China coverage, in-network status, direct billing and pre-authorization in writing. See insurance guide.
4 weeks out: visa and booking
- Secure entry. Verify visa-free eligibility or apply for the S2 visa with buffer time. Check your passport has 6+ months validity. See visa-free rules.
- Book the appointment. Use the 114 platform (Beijing), WeChat Mini Program, or the hospital's international desk. Register your passport profile 1–3 days early. See booking guides.
- Book flights and accommodation near the hospital with flexible dates where possible.
1 week out: documents and health
- Passport (6+ months validity) and a printed copy.
- Appointment confirmation and hospital contact numbers.
- Medical records: home-country records, medication list with doses, imaging on USB/digital.
- Insurance documents: policy, assistance hotline, pre-authorization letters.
- Medications: enough for the trip plus extras, in original packaging with prescriptions. Note: some medications are restricted in China — check current rules.
- Travel insurance including emergency cover, even if your medical plan is confirmed.
- Phone setup: WeChat installed and verified, translation app, and an eSIM or SIM plan that works in China.
Medication alert. Some common Western prescription drugs are controlled in China and can cause problems at customs. Verify your medications are permitted before you fly, and carry the prescription and doctor's letter.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I book appointments before flying?
For public hospitals, book 1–4 weeks ahead depending on specialty and season; international departments of private hospitals often accept short-notice bookings.
Do I need to bring my own scans and records?
Yes — bring digital copies (CD/USB) and your medication list. Sending them in advance for remote review is even better and saves repeat tests.
What if my treatment changes after arrival?
Most international departments can adjust your plan on-site. If your stay needs to extend, follow the extension process before your visa expires.
