Dental Implants & Dentistry in China
Dental work is the single most popular reason for medical travel to China — and for good reason. A national price reform cut implant prices dramatically, and a single trip can complete an entire treatment plan.
The price advantage
| China (post-reform) | US / UK / Australia | |
|---|---|---|
| Single implant (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, etc.) | RMB 4,000–12,000 ($550–1,650) | $3,000–6,000 |
China's national volume-based procurement reduced implant prices by an average of 55%. Even with travel costs, the savings on multiple implants typically dwarf the trip itself.
What a single trip can cover
A well-planned trip can combine:
- Consultation, 3D imaging and treatment planning (day 1)
- Extractions and immediate work where clinically appropriate
- Implant placement (surgical phase)
- Dental crowns (single-visit CAD/CAM in many clinics)
- Root canal treatment
- Teeth whitening
One honest caveat: a full implant cycle (placement → osseointegration → final crown) takes 3–6 months. That means either two trips (surgery + final crown) or a longer stay for the final phase. Single-visit treatments like crowns, root canals, extractions and whitening can be completed within a typical trip.
How to plan the trip
- Get a remote treatment plan. Send panoramic X-rays or a CBCT scan to the dental hospital/clinic for a written plan and quote.
- Choose the implant brand — Straumann and Nobel Biocare are available at premium prices; Chinese brands cost less. Your quote should name the brand.
- Book two phases if needed — surgery and crown placement are separate visits with healing in between.
- Arrange follow-up — your dentist can coordinate with a local dentist at home for monitoring, or schedule your return visit.
Frequently asked questions
Are Chinese dental implants safe?
International-standard brands (Straumann, Nobel Biocare) are the same products used in the US/UK/Australia. Choose a university dental hospital or a reputable private clinic with English support, and ask for the implant's brand and certification.
Can I get everything done in one trip?
Single-visit procedures (crowns, root canals, extractions, whitening) — yes. Implants need two phases over 3–6 months, so plan for two trips or a long stay.
Will my home dentist accept the work?
Most dentists will monitor well-done implant work. Bring your treatment records, implant certificates and X-rays, and give your home dentist the details of what was placed.
