Hospitals in Other Chinese Cities
The big three cities dominate international care, but they're not the only option. Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hainan and others are actively building international patient services — here's how to find and evaluate them.
Where international services are growing
- Shenzhen — a tech-city medical hub close to Hong Kong, with international clinics and cross-border patient flows.
- Chengdu — a western China medical centre with strong specialties in dentistry, orthopedics and TCM-oriented rehabilitation.
- Hainan — the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone offers imported drugs and devices, medical technology, and 61-country visa-free entry that explicitly covers treatment.
- Other provincial capitals — most major cities now have at least one hospital with an international department (国际医疗部), especially the flagship public hospital of each province.
How to find an international department
- Identify the province's flagship public hospital (usually the one named after the medical university or the provincial people's hospital).
- Search its official website for "International Medical Services" or the international department page — almost all major hospitals now have one.
- Check the service languages listed and whether the department handles foreign passport registration.
- Contact the department directly for a written quote and appointment before travelling.
What to verify before you commit
- Does the department register foreign patients with passports directly? (Some need a Chinese contact or letter.)
- Are English medical records and discharge summaries available?
- Does the hospital accept international insurance direct billing?
- How far is the hospital from the nearest international airport and good accommodation?
Frequently asked questions
Is treatment outside Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou cheaper?
Generally yes — hospitals in smaller cities often have lower fees for the same procedures, though international departments price higher than local rates. Compare written quotes before deciding.
Do smaller-city hospitals speak English?
International departments of flagship hospitals typically have English-speaking staff, but coverage is thinner than in the big three cities. Confirm language support directly.
What is Boao Lecheng in Hainan?
It's a national medical tourism pilot zone where internationally approved drugs and devices can be used sooner than elsewhere in China — worth considering for specific advanced treatments.
